Buick Reatta

Petrol Coupe 1988–1991 165 hp USA

The Buick Reatta was GM's personal sports-luxury coupe — a handbuilt two-seat Buick with an Electronic Control Center touchscreen system that was 20 years ahead of its time. With only 21,851 coupes and 2,132 convertibles produced, the Reatta is a rare, historically significant collector car representing Buick's most unusual modern model.

Overview

The Buick Reatta was one of GM's most ambitious and unusual production cars of the late 1980s. A two-seat personal sports coupe handbuilt at a dedicated Reatta Craft Centre in Lansing, Michigan, it featured the Electronic Control Center — a touchscreen interface mounted in the centre console that controlled climate, audio, and vehicle information. This was 1988 — 15 years before touchscreen interfaces became commonplace in mainstream vehicles.

The Reatta used the 3.8-litre V6 from the Park Avenue, tuned to 165 hp in the Reatta's sportier application, mounted transversely in a modified C-body platform derived from the Eldorado/Toronado. The suspension was tuned more firmly than standard Buick fare, and the overall package was intended to compete with small European personal coupes. A convertible version was added in 1990.

Production ended after just four years — never meeting sales expectations, partly because Buick's traditional buyer didn't want a two-seat sports car, and partly because the price ($26,000–$35,000) made it expensive relative to the competition. Today the Reatta is a genuine collector's car: the convertibles are particularly rare (2,132 produced), and the Touchscreen-equipped 1988–1990 coupes are historically significant as an early experiment in what we now call in-car technology.

Repair & Service in Azerbaijan

Buick is a General Motors brand, and GM vehicles are serviced across Azerbaijan through GM-trained independent workshops and specialist American car mechanics. Dedicated Buick dealerships are not present in the country, but the brand's shared architecture with Chevrolet and GMC means that mechanical expertise and many common parts are accessible through the broader GM service network in Baku. Electrical and transmission specialists familiar with GM platforms are available, though Buick-specific components may require ordering from international suppliers with some lead time.

  • 3.8L V6: intake manifold gasket inspection is the primary maintenance concern
  • ECC touchscreen (1988–90): the CRT screen is fragile and replacement units are extremely rare — handle with care
  • Convertible top mechanism: cloth and hydraulics require specialist attention
  • C-body suspension: all rubber components should be inspected/replaced given the age

Reatta FAQ — Azerbaijan Buyers

Is the Buick Reatta a collectible?

Yes — particularly the convertibles (2,132 built) and the original 1988 touchscreen coupes. Values have been slowly appreciating as the Reatta gains recognition for its historical significance as an early experiment in in-car technology. The ECC touchscreen, while primitive by modern standards, was genuinely revolutionary for 1988 — predating any mainstream production car touchscreen by 15 or more years. Clean, original examples command collector premiums that will likely continue to increase.

Should You Buy the Buick Reatta?

A genuine collector's car — especially the convertibles. Buy the best example you can find.

The Buick Reatta is the right purchase for a collector who appreciates American automotive history and wants something genuinely unusual. The convertibles are particularly rare and historically significant. The ECC touchscreen coupes are technologically fascinating. For any Reatta purchase, buy the best-condition example available regardless of slight price premium — originality and documentation are the primary value determinants at this collectible car age.
