Aurus is Russia's equivalent of Rolls-Royce — a state-backed ultra-luxury automotive brand created to supply the Kremlin's presidential motorcade and now available to a select private clientele seeking the pinnacle of Russian engineering and craftsmanship.
Aurus was born from a Russian government initiative to replace the foreign luxury vehicles that had served Kremlin officials for decades with a domestically produced alternative. The project — called Kortezh in Russia — was launched in 2012 under the direction of the Central Scientific Research Automobile and Automotive Engines Institute (NAMI) and supported by the Rostec state defence and technology conglomerate. The mandate was clear: produce a Russian-made, state-calibre luxury vehicle capable of competing with the very best in the world.
Porsche Engineering, brought in as a technical partner, contributed German chassis and drivetrain expertise to the Russian platform's development. The result — the Aurus Senat, revealed at the 2018 Moscow Motor Show — was a product of enormous ambition: a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 hybrid powertrain producing 598 hp, all-wheel drive, and a cabin drawing on Russian classical art and architecture for every material and detail. President Vladimir Putin's 2018 inauguration ceremony in the Senat provided the brand with a global debut that no marketing budget could have bought.
The name Aurus derives from "aurum" — Latin for gold — reflecting both the brand's aspirational positioning and Russia's deep tradition of imperial golden iconography. NAMI and Rostec have positioned Aurus not merely as a state fleet vehicle but as a genuine commercial luxury brand accessible to a select private clientele, with international sales plans targeting the Middle East, China, and other markets where Russian prestige carries weight.
Aurus vehicles combine imperial Russian aesthetics with cutting-edge engineering — hand-crafted interiors, a bespoke V8 hybrid powertrain, and a precise Russian visual language.

The Aurus product family rides on a single Unified Modular Platform (UMMP) shared across all body styles — an engineering architecture that allows the brand to offer different types of vehicles while sharing the development cost of the underlying engineering.
The AURUS powertrain — a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 mated to a hybrid electric motor system — produces a combined 598 hp and 880 Nm of torque. The hybrid architecture was chosen primarily not for fuel economy, but for the smooth and near-instantaneous torque delivery it provides, along with the ability to move the vehicle silently on electric power at low speeds — a critically important characteristic for ceremonial and security use. A nine-speed automatic transmission, permanent all-wheel drive, and electronically controlled air suspension deliver the smooth, isolated driving experience expected from an ultra-luxury vehicle.
Porsche Engineering's involvement in chassis development is evident in the dynamic capability of both the Senat and Komendant — despite their considerable size and mass, Aurus vehicles display surprising agility. The platform's steel frame was engineered to accommodate both armoured body panels and genuine luxury, allowing the brand to function simultaneously as a state security vehicle and a true luxury automobile.
Aurus carries significant symbolic appeal in Azerbaijan and the broader Caucasus region — as Russia's state luxury brand and the presidential motorcade's vehicle of choice, Aurus ownership represents the ultimate expression of ambition and status. Azerbaijan's wealthy business community, with its appetite for exclusive European and international luxury brands, represents a natural target market for the brand as Aurus extends private sales beyond Russia's borders.
Azerbaijan's geographic and historical ties to Russia, combined with a tradition of respect for state and official symbols, give Aurus a cultural resonance in the country that purely Western luxury brands cannot claim. As Aurus grows export sales in the Middle East and CIS markets, Azerbaijan — with its affluent oil economy and appetite for prestige automobiles — remains a logical and reachable target market for the brand's commercial ambitions.
