Panoz was founded in 1989 by Daniel "Don" Panoz, an American entrepreneur and motorsport enthusiast whose family had made its fortune in the pharmaceutical industry. Don Panoz had a genuine passion for racing and for the kind of visceral, driver-focused sports cars that European manufacturers like Lotus had championed — cars that prioritised handling precision and lightweight construction over luxury and comfort.

The company's first car — the Panoz Roadster — was an audacious American interpretation of the British sports car formula: an aluminium-bodied, front-engined open two-seater powered by a Ford Mustang V8 engine, with an emphasis on communicative handling and driving engagement rather than outright speed. The car attracted attention for its combination of American V8 performance with a driving character more commonly associated with British roadsters.

Panoz became equally famous for its motorsport activities — the company created the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) and competed at Le Mans itself with the innovative GTR-1 and LMP racing cars.
