Origins & Heritage
The Cadillac Automobile Company was founded on 22 August 1902 in Detroit by Henry Martyn Leland — the same precision engineer who later founded Lincoln. Named after Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, the French explorer who founded the city of Detroit in 1701, the brand's very name is rooted in the history of the city it built. Leland's obsession with precision engineering — drawn from his experience making Browning rifle mechanisms for the US Army — immediately set Cadillac apart from its competitors.
In 1908, Cadillac received the Dewar Trophy — the most prestigious award in the early automobile world — for demonstrating perfect interchangeability of parts. Three Cadillac Model K cars were disassembled, their parts mixed together randomly, then reassembled and driven 800 km without adjustment. All three completed the run without incident. The Royal Automobile Club's jury awarded Cadillac the title 'Standard of the World' — a phrase the brand adopted as its motto and justified for decades.
Cadillac was acquired by General Motors in 1909 and grew into GM's prestige flagship. The brand's tailfin era of the 1950s — jet-age styling translating Cold War optimism into chrome and steel — made Cadillac the defining symbol of American prosperity and ambition worldwide.

Super Cruise — Hands-Free Pioneer
Cadillac Super Cruise, introduced in 2018 on the CT6, was the world's first true hands-free highway driving system for consumer vehicles. Unlike competing systems, Super Cruise uses a precision LiDAR-mapped road database covering over 750,000 km of divided highway — combined with real-time camera, radar, and GPS inputs.
The system's most distinctive innovation is driver attention monitoring via an infrared camera in the steering column — if the driver looks away from the road for too long, the system issues progressively more insistent warnings before safely disengaging. Independent testing has consistently ranked Super Cruise as the most capable and safest hands-free system available.
- Super Cruise hands-free driving — 750,000+ km of LiDAR-mapped highway coverage in North America
- Driver attention monitoring — infrared camera ensures eyes-on-road at all times during autonomous operation
- Magnetic Ride Control 4.0 — Corvette-derived adaptive damping with the fastest response of any production suspension system
- 38-inch OLED display — curved screen spanning the full Escalade dashboard width, the largest in any production vehicle
- AKG Studio Reference Audio — 36-speaker, 1,000-watt system calibrated in Cadillac's anechoic chamber
