Origins & Racing Pedigree

Dallara Automobili was founded in 1972 by Gian Paolo Dallara in Varano de' Melegari, near Parma in northern Italy. Dallara had previously held senior engineering roles at Ferrari, Lamborghini, and De Tomaso — three of the most prestigious names in Italian performance car manufacturing — before establishing his own company focused entirely on the construction of racing cars. From the outset, the ambition was clear: to build the world's finest open-wheel racing cars using the most advanced aerodynamic and structural engineering available.

The company began by constructing single-seater racing cars for Formula 3 and Formula 2 competitions, where the combination of Dallara's deep engineering knowledge and the company's rigorous development processes quickly produced competitive results. Through the 1970s and 1980s, Dallara chassis won with increasing frequency in European single-seater formulas, establishing a reputation for structural integrity, aerodynamic efficiency, and reliable mechanical packaging that other constructors found difficult to match.

In 1997, Dallara became the sole chassis supplier to the IndyCar Series — the premier open-wheel racing series in the United States — a partnership that has continued to the present day. The company also became the exclusive chassis supplier for Formula 2, Formula 3, and numerous national Formula 3 series worldwide. Today, a Dallara chassis is almost certainly the first single-seater racing car that any aspiring Formula 1 driver will compete in, and the company's engineering expertise has been applied to the Dallara Stradale — a road-legal sports car that offers the nearest thing to a pure racing experience legally available on public roads.

Key Milestones

1972
Dallara Automobili founded by Gian Paolo Dallara in Varano de' Melegari — applying Ferrari, Lamborghini, and De Tomaso engineering expertise to the construction of competition single-seaters.
1988
Dallara becomes the dominant chassis supplier in European Formula 3, winning championships with multiple drivers and establishing its position as the reference constructor in the most important junior single-seater formula in motorsport.
2008
Dallara secures the contract to become the sole chassis supplier for the IndyCar Series — the first of several exclusive supply agreements that would make Dallara the most widely raced single-seater car constructor in motorsport history.
2017
Dallara Stradale unveiled — the company's first road car, a lightweight open two-seater that uses active aerodynamics to deliver genuine racing car performance on public roads, with a range of body configuration options.

Notable Products

Dallara's output encompasses the world's most prestigious single-seater racing car series as well as one remarkable road car.

Formula 2 / Formula 3 Chassis
The Dallara F2 and F3 cars are the primary pathway to Formula 1 for the world's best young drivers — every modern F1 champion has competed in a Dallara chassis on their way to the top.
IndyCar (IR18)
The Dallara IR18 is the sole chassis used in the IndyCar Series, competing in the Indianapolis 500 and across the full North American oval and road course calendar.
Dallara Stradale
A road-legal sports car using active aerodynamics — available as open roadster, barchetta, spyder, or coupé — producing up to 400 hp from a turbocharged Ford engine and weighing under 850 kg.

Engineering Expertise

Dallara's engineering capabilities are centred on advanced aerodynamics, carbon fibre composite construction, and vehicle dynamics development. The company operates one of the most sophisticated aerodynamic research programmes of any racing car constructor in the world, with a full-scale wind tunnel and CFD facilities that rival those used by Formula 1 teams.

  • Carbon fibre monocoque construction — Dallara was among the earliest constructors to adopt carbon fibre as the primary structural material, producing chassis that are both lighter and safer than conventional aluminium alternatives
  • Advanced aerodynamics — the company's wind tunnel and CFD programmes ensure that every Dallara chassis produces maximum downforce for minimum drag, with consistent and predictable aerodynamic behaviour
  • Impact and crash structure design — Dallara's focus on driver safety has made its chassis among the safest in motorsport; the company has contributed significantly to FIA research on impact absorption
  • Road car active aerodynamics (Stradale) — the Dallara Stradale uses a moveable front splitter and rear wing that adjust according to speed and driver input, replicating the behaviour of a full racing car on public roads

Dallara & Azerbaijan

Dallara has an indirect but genuine connection to Azerbaijan through motorsport — the Formula 2 and Formula 3 championships, both run on Dallara chassis, have visited the Baku City Circuit as part of their support programme to the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Any driver who has raced in these feeder series at Baku has done so in a Dallara car.

The Baku City Circuit is one of the most celebrated modern additions to the Formula 1 calendar, and the Dallara-supplied Formula 2 races at Baku have produced some of the most dramatic action in recent junior single-seater history. For Azerbaijani motorsport fans, Dallara represents the engineering foundation of the racing series they watch alongside Formula 1.

Why Dallara Is Unique

  • Dominant constructor: Dallara produces more racing cars used in top-level competition than any other manufacturer in motorsport history — its chassis compete across every continent and in the majority of the world's most prestigious single-seater series.
  • F1 driver pathway: Virtually every current Formula 1 driver reached the top in Dallara machinery — the F3 and F2 championships are the recognised pathway to Formula 1, and Dallara has been the exclusive supplier for decades.
  • Baku connection: Dallara chassis race at the Baku City Circuit as Formula 2 and Formula 3 support races — making Dallara directly relevant to Azerbaijani motorsport culture.
  • Road car perfection: The Dallara Stradale is arguably the purest driving experience available in a road-legal car — a genuine racing car that you can register for road use, offering an insight into the performance that Dallara's race cars deliver.
