The world's most successful racing car constructor — Dallara chassis compete in Formula 2, Formula 3, IndyCar, and dozens of single-make series worldwide, with one road car to its name.
Dallara Automobili was founded in 1972 by Gian Paolo Dallara in Varano de' Melegari, near Parma in northern Italy. Dallara had previously held senior engineering roles at Ferrari, Lamborghini, and De Tomaso — three of the most prestigious names in Italian performance car manufacturing — before establishing his own company focused entirely on the construction of racing cars. From the outset, the ambition was clear: to build the world's finest open-wheel racing cars using the most advanced aerodynamic and structural engineering available.
The company began by constructing single-seater racing cars for Formula 3 and Formula 2 competitions, where the combination of Dallara's deep engineering knowledge and the company's rigorous development processes quickly produced competitive results. Through the 1970s and 1980s, Dallara chassis won with increasing frequency in European single-seater formulas, establishing a reputation for structural integrity, aerodynamic efficiency, and reliable mechanical packaging that other constructors found difficult to match.
In 1997, Dallara became the sole chassis supplier to the IndyCar Series — the premier open-wheel racing series in the United States — a partnership that has continued to the present day. The company also became the exclusive chassis supplier for Formula 2, Formula 3, and numerous national Formula 3 series worldwide. Today, a Dallara chassis is almost certainly the first single-seater racing car that any aspiring Formula 1 driver will compete in, and the company's engineering expertise has been applied to the Dallara Stradale — a road-legal sports car that offers the nearest thing to a pure racing experience legally available on public roads.
Dallara's output encompasses the world's most prestigious single-seater racing car series as well as one remarkable road car.
Dallara's engineering capabilities are centred on advanced aerodynamics, carbon fibre composite construction, and vehicle dynamics development. The company operates one of the most sophisticated aerodynamic research programmes of any racing car constructor in the world, with a full-scale wind tunnel and CFD facilities that rival those used by Formula 1 teams.
Dallara has an indirect but genuine connection to Azerbaijan through motorsport — the Formula 2 and Formula 3 championships, both run on Dallara chassis, have visited the Baku City Circuit as part of their support programme to the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Any driver who has raced in these feeder series at Baku has done so in a Dallara car.
The Baku City Circuit is one of the most celebrated modern additions to the Formula 1 calendar, and the Dallara-supplied Formula 2 races at Baku have produced some of the most dramatic action in recent junior single-seater history. For Azerbaijani motorsport fans, Dallara represents the engineering foundation of the racing series they watch alongside Formula 1.
