Origins & Heritage
Donkervoort Automobielen was founded in 1978 by Joop Donkervoort in Lelystad, the Netherlands — built on the philosophy that a truly great driver's car must be as light as possible and as fast as necessary. Joop Donkervoort began by producing a close derivative of the Lotus Seven, obtaining a licence to build the iconic design in the Netherlands, and rapidly evolved the concept into something distinctly his own. The result was a series of increasingly sophisticated open-top roadsters that became synonymous with Netherlands-bred engineering excellence.
Donkervoort cars have always been built in very limited numbers — typically between 20 and 40 per year — with each vehicle assembled largely by hand at the Lelystad factory. From the beginning, Joop Donkervoort chose Audi turbocharged four-cylinder engines as the primary power source, giving his cars the combination of high power and low weight that produces the extraordinary performance-to-weight ratios for which Donkervoort is famous. Modern Donkervoort models produce lap times around major European circuits that embarrass cars costing many times more.
The company remains family-owned and has passed to Joop's son Denis Donkervoort, who has guided the brand through the introduction of carbon-fibre construction and Audi RS engines in the D8 GTO series.
