Origins & Heritage

Donkervoort Automobielen was founded in 1978 by Joop Donkervoort in Lelystad, the Netherlands — built on the philosophy that a truly great driver's car must be as light as possible and as fast as necessary. Joop Donkervoort began by producing a close derivative of the Lotus Seven, obtaining a licence to build the iconic design in the Netherlands, and rapidly evolved the concept into something distinctly his own. The result was a series of increasingly sophisticated open-top roadsters that became synonymous with Netherlands-bred engineering excellence.

Donkervoort cars have always been built in very limited numbers — typically between 20 and 40 per year — with each vehicle assembled largely by hand at the Lelystad factory. From the beginning, Joop Donkervoort chose Audi turbocharged four-cylinder engines as the primary power source, giving his cars the combination of high power and low weight that produces the extraordinary performance-to-weight ratios for which Donkervoort is famous. Modern Donkervoort models produce lap times around major European circuits that embarrass cars costing many times more.

The company remains family-owned and has passed to Joop's son Denis Donkervoort, who has guided the brand through the introduction of carbon-fibre construction and Audi RS engines in the D8 GTO series. Donkervoort's reputation for engineering honesty — every car is designed to maximise the driving experience rather than to impress in specification sheets — has earned it a devoted following among serious drivers across Europe and beyond.

Key Milestones

1978
Donkervoort founded by Joop Donkervoort in Lelystad — beginning with Lotus Seven-derived designs and establishing the philosophy of extreme lightweight construction and total driver focus that defines every car the company has built.
1992
Introduction of the S8 — a major evolution that began transitioning Donkervoort away from Lotus Seven proportions toward a proprietary design with wider body, better aerodynamics, and significantly improved performance.
2013
D8 GTO launched — a landmark model featuring a 340 hp Audi RS turbocharged five-cylinder engine in a carbon-composite body weighing just 680 kg. The D8 GTO becomes the fastest accelerating road-legal Dutch car of its era.
2020
F22 unveiled — the most radical Donkervoort yet, featuring full carbon-fibre construction, a 400 hp Audi RS3 five-cylinder engine, and a sub-600 kg kerb weight producing extraordinary levels of performance and aerodynamic downforce.

Notable Models

Every Donkervoort model has been built around a single obsession: delivering the maximum possible driving intensity in the lightest, most focused package.

Donkervoort D8 GTO (2013–)
340 hp Audi turbocharged five-cylinder in a carbon-composite body at 680 kg — a car that accelerates to 100 km/h in under 3 seconds and generates serious aerodynamic downforce at speed.
Donkervoort D8 GTO-RS (2015–)
Track-focused evolution of the GTO — wider bodywork, more downforce, and a 420 hp engine option. The RS is capable of generating over 2 G of lateral acceleration in cornering.
Donkervoort F22 (2020–)
Donkervoort's most advanced car — full carbon-fibre structure, 420 hp Audi RS3 five-cylinder, sub-600 kg kerb weight, and a fully active aerodynamic package with hydraulic ride height adjustment.

Engineering Philosophy

Donkervoort engineering is defined by an unwillingness to compromise the driving experience for comfort, convenience, or marketing appeal. Every technical decision is evaluated against its effect on weight, balance, and driver feedback.

  • Carbon-fibre monocoque construction — modern Donkervoorts use a full carbon-composite tub structure that provides exceptional rigidity at minimum weight, enabling the sub-600 kg total mass that makes their performance figures possible
  • Audi turbocharged five-cylinder engines — Donkervoort uses Audi's RS turbocharged inline-five exclusively, valuing its distinctive power delivery and torque characteristics for the specific driving experience they create in a sub-700 kg car
  • Active aerodynamics — the F22 uses an active rear wing and diffuser system that adjusts automatically to driving conditions, providing downforce when needed and reduced drag at speed
  • Pushrod suspension with inboard dampers — a motorsport-derived suspension layout that minimises unsprung weight and allows extremely precise spring and damper tuning for both road and track conditions

Donkervoort in Azerbaijan

Donkervoort vehicles are extremely rare in Azerbaijan — with annual production measured in dozens rather than thousands, the brand's global footprint is necessarily small. The handful of examples that reach Azerbaijan or neighbouring countries do so through enthusiast import, typically by dedicated sports car collectors who seek out the most intense driving experiences available.

For Azerbaijani motorsport and performance car enthusiasts, Donkervoort represents the ultimate expression of the Lotus Seven philosophy — a car that has been continuously refined for over four decades toward a single goal: the most complete, unfiltered driving experience that road-legal engineering can achieve. The brand's Dutch engineering integrity and family-owned independence make it a compelling counterpoint to the growing influence of large corporate supercar manufacturers.

Why Donkervoort Stands Apart

  • True driver's car: Donkervoort builds cars for people who consider driving an art form. With no electronic driver aids beyond ABS, every Donkervoort communicates every road surface nuance directly to the driver through its steering, chassis, and throttle response.
  • Extraordinary performance-to-weight: Sub-700 kg with 340–420 hp means Donkervoort models produce performance figures that challenge cars costing three to five times more — making them one of the most efficient performance propositions available.
  • Hand-built Dutch craftsmanship: Every Donkervoort is assembled by hand in limited numbers, with each car individually configured to its owner's preferences. The level of personalisation and craftsmanship attention would be impossible in higher-volume production.
  • Living evolution: Unlike many specialist car makers, Donkervoort continuously develops its cars with new technology. The F22 is a genuinely modern car with active aerodynamics and carbon construction — not a nostalgic throwback.
