Few automotive brands carry a military lineage as storied as Jeep. In 1940, the United States Army issued an urgent request for a lightweight reconnaissance vehicle that could traverse any terrain. Three manufacturers — American Bantam, Willys-Overland, and Ford — all built competing prototypes. The Willys MB ultimately became the standardised design, though all three companies produced variants during the war. When the war ended, Willys-Overland recognised the civilian potential of its military workhorse.
