Origins & Heritage

KrAZ (Kremenchuk Automobile Plant, КрАЗ — Кременчуцький автомобільний завод) has its origins in 1945, when the Kremenchuk plant in central Ukraine was established to produce heavy trucks for Soviet post-war reconstruction. Initially producing trucks based on Yaroslavl designs transferred from the Russian plant, the Kremenchuk facility progressively developed its own engineering capability and manufacturing identity. In 1959, the plant was formally reorganised as KrAZ and began producing trucks fully under its own brand designation — marking the birth of Ukraine's most significant domestic heavy truck manufacturer.

The KrAZ-255, introduced in the 1960s and affectionately known as "The Buffalo" (Buivol) for its raw power and unstoppable terrain capability, became the defining vehicle in the brand's history and one of the most iconic heavy trucks produced anywhere in the Soviet Union. The 255's 6×6 drivetrain, enormous ground clearance, and diesel engine power made it capable of performing in conditions — deep mud, flooded crossings, soft terrain — that defeated every conventional truck of its era. This vehicle established KrAZ's reputation as the maker of Ukraine's toughest working trucks.

Following Ukrainian independence in 1991, KrAZ underwent privatisation and restructuring, transitioning from Soviet state enterprise to an independent Ukrainian manufacturer competing in international markets.
