Origins & Heritage
KrAZ (Kremenchuk Automobile Plant, КрАЗ — Кременчуцький автомобільний завод) has its origins in 1945, when the Kremenchuk plant in central Ukraine was established to produce heavy trucks for Soviet post-war reconstruction. Initially producing trucks based on Yaroslavl designs transferred from the Russian plant, the Kremenchuk facility progressively developed its own engineering capability and manufacturing identity. In 1959, the plant was formally reorganised as KrAZ and began producing trucks fully under its own brand designation — marking the birth of Ukraine's most significant domestic heavy truck manufacturer.
The KrAZ-255, introduced in the 1960s and affectionately known as "The Buffalo" (Buivol) for its raw power and unstoppable terrain capability, became the defining vehicle in the brand's history and one of the most iconic heavy trucks produced anywhere in the Soviet Union. The 255's 6×6 drivetrain, enormous ground clearance, and diesel engine power made it capable of performing in conditions — deep mud, flooded crossings, soft terrain — that defeated every conventional truck of its era. This vehicle established KrAZ's reputation as the maker of Ukraine's toughest working trucks.
Following Ukrainian independence in 1991, KrAZ underwent privatisation and restructuring, transitioning from Soviet state enterprise to an independent Ukrainian manufacturer competing in international markets. The brand invested in modernising its truck range with Euro-compliant engines, improved cab comfort, and updated drivetrain systems while retaining the heavy-duty construction philosophy that had defined its products since the 1950s. KrAZ trucks continue to be used extensively in construction, mining, oil & gas, and military applications across Ukraine and export markets.

Key Models
KrAZ produces a range of heavy-duty trucks for construction, mining, military, and all-terrain commercial applications.
KrAZ-255 "Buffalo"
The most iconic vehicle in KrAZ's history and one of the most recognisable heavy trucks produced in the Soviet Union — the 255's 6×6 drivetrain, massive ground clearance, and powerful diesel engine provided off-road heavy haulage capability that no competing vehicle of its era could match. Produced from 1967 to 1994 with over 100,000 units built, the 255 served in construction, forestry, oil & gas, military, and agricultural applications across the Soviet Union and its export markets, including Azerbaijan where examples remain in active use in agricultural and utility roles.
KrAZ-6322
The modern successor to the KrAZ-255, bringing the brand's heavy-duty all-terrain truck tradition into the contemporary market with Euro-compliant engine options, improved cab ergonomics, and updated powertrain technology. The 6322 retains the 6×6 drive configuration and heavy payload capacity of its legendary predecessor while meeting the emissions standards and operator comfort requirements of contemporary commercial truck buyers across export markets.
KrAZ-7140
KrAZ's heavy-duty dump truck variant, configured for quarrying, mining, and large-scale earthmoving applications where maximum payload capacity and durability under extreme loading cycles are the primary operational requirements. The 7140's robust construction and high ground clearance allow operation in the challenging terrain conditions typical of active mining and quarrying sites across the former Soviet space.
KrAZ-5401
A heavy tractor unit from KrAZ's commercial range, designed for road haulage and logistics applications where maximum payload and reliable long-distance operation are the priorities. The 5401 brings KrAZ's heavy-duty engineering heritage to road freight applications, providing operators with a domestically produced alternative to imported European tractor units at competitive acquisition cost.
KrAZ Military Range
A comprehensive range of military-specification trucks and armoured vehicles developed for the Ukrainian Armed Forces and export customers, including armoured logistics carriers, fire support platforms, and specialised engineering vehicles. KrAZ's military vehicle programme has expanded significantly in recent years, reflecting the brand's strategic importance to Ukrainian national defence and its capability to produce specialised heavy vehicles at scale.
Engineering & Technology
KrAZ's engineering philosophy prioritises structural robustness, mechanical durability under extreme loading conditions, and the ability to operate in the most severe terrain and weather environments. This approach — refined over seven decades of heavy truck production — produces vehicles that may lack the refinement of modern European competitors but excel in the conditions where durability and field-repairability matter most.
- 6×6 all-terrain drive architecture — KrAZ's heavy models use a three-axle 6×6 drive configuration inherited from the legendary 255, providing the all-wheel traction needed for soft ground, construction site terrain, and unpaved surfaces under maximum payload; the mechanical simplicity of the engagement system allows field adjustment without specialist tooling
- Heavy payload capacity — KrAZ trucks are engineered for payload capacities at the upper range of commercially available heavy trucks, with models rated from 15 to over 40 tonnes payload; this extreme load capacity makes KrAZ products the appropriate choice for the heaviest construction, quarrying, and industrial haulage applications
- Euro-compliant modern diesel engines — current KrAZ production uses modern diesel engines meeting Euro 3, 4, or 5 standards depending on export market requirements, providing the emissions compliance needed for operation in regulated markets while delivering the torque and durability required for heavy commercial operation
- Armoured and military-specification capability — KrAZ's military vehicle programme demonstrates the brand's engineering ability to produce specialised heavy vehicles to exacting military standards, including ballistic protection, mine-blast protection, and specialised mission equipment integration that commercial truck manufacturers do not typically offer
- Parts supply and field maintenance network — KrAZ's long production history across the former Soviet space means that experienced mechanics across the CIS region are familiar with the brand's mechanical systems, and that a substantial used parts market exists for older models; this accumulated knowledge and parts availability reduces the ownership risk for buyers in markets without formal KrAZ service infrastructure
KrAZ in Azerbaijan
KrAZ heavy trucks entered Azerbaijan as standard Soviet industrial and military equipment, serving in construction projects, forestry operations, agricultural transport, and military logistics during the Soviet era. The KrAZ-255 in particular — the "Buffalo" — was widely deployed across Azerbaijan in heavy construction, earthmoving, and utility applications, and surviving examples continue to serve in agricultural and construction roles in rural Azerbaijan where their extraordinary payload capacity and terrain capability provide advantages that no modern commercial truck can replicate at equivalent cost.
For Azerbaijani buyers, KrAZ trucks represent the most cost-effective access point for heavy-duty all-terrain truck capability, particularly in agricultural, construction, and quarrying applications where Western European alternatives are prohibitively expensive. The mechanical familiarity of KrAZ drivetrains among experienced CIS mechanics, combined with the availability of parts through the Ukrainian and Russian heavy truck parts networks that serve Azerbaijan, makes ownership of both historic and modern KrAZ products practically viable for operators in sectors where the trucks' heavy-duty capability is genuinely required.
Why Consider a KrAZ?
- Maximum heavy-duty payload at competitive cost: KrAZ trucks provide access to 15–40+ tonne payload capacity at acquisition costs significantly below equivalent Western European heavy trucks — the most cost-effective approach to heavy commercial transport capacity in the CIS market.
- Legendary 6×6 all-terrain capability: The KrAZ-255's heritage of unstoppable all-terrain performance has been carried forward into modern KrAZ products — buyers who need genuine heavy-load terrain capability rather than merely road-going heavy transport get access to engineering proven across seven decades of Soviet and post-Soviet heavy construction.
- Familiar to CIS mechanics: KrAZ's long Soviet-era production history means that experienced mechanics across Azerbaijan are familiar with the brand's mechanical systems — a practical advantage that reduces maintenance cost and turnaround time compared to unfamiliar European or Japanese alternatives.
- Extensive historical parts availability: The KrAZ-255 and 6322's widespread distribution across the former Soviet space has created a substantial used parts market, providing older-model owners with accessible components through the established CIS heavy truck parts networks that serve Azerbaijan.
- Ukrainian industrial heritage: For buyers who value industrial provenance and the cultural connection to Ukraine's manufacturing legacy — particularly relevant in the current geopolitical context — KrAZ represents a brand with genuine historical significance and a manufacturing tradition that stretches back to Ukraine's post-war industrial reconstruction.
