The Polo with a boot — VW's forgotten two-door notchback answered European demand for a proper three-box small car.
The Volkswagen Derby was introduced in 1977 as a two-door notchback coupe built on the Polo MK1 platform. Where the Polo offered a hatchback body, the Derby extended the rear with a separate, squared-off boot, creating a three-box silhouette that was significantly more popular than hatchbacks in several key European markets — particularly in Germany and Switzerland. The Derby used the same 1.1-litre (50 hp) and 1.3-litre (60 hp) carburetted petrol engines as the Polo MK1, mated to three- or four-speed manual gearboxes. Despite its modest outputs, the Derby's short wheelbase and light kerb weight of around 730 kg made it a genuinely spirited companion around town and on secondary roads.
Production of the European Derby ended in 1981 after approximately 180,000 units had been built, making it a significant but ultimately short-lived chapter in Volkswagen's model history. The Derby's story did not end there, however — in Brazil, the Volkswagen "Derby" name was applied to a different model, a two-door coupe based on the Voyage/Passat architecture. The European Derby is today a niche collector's piece, sought by Polo MK1 enthusiasts who appreciate its unusual notchback proportions. It is not a model commonly encountered in Azerbaijan, and any example that surfaces would be a direct grey-market import from a Western European collection.
| Variant | Powertrain | Power | 0–100 km/h | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Derby 1.1L | 1.1L inline-4, carburettor | 50 hp / 74 Nm | 18.0s (est.) | Basic urban commuting; lowest acquisition and running costs |
| Derby 1.3L | 1.3L inline-4, carburettor | 60 hp / 86 Nm | 15.0s (est.) | More relaxed motorway cruising; improved overtaking ability |
| Model | Strength | Compromise |
|---|---|---|
| VW Polo MK1 (Hatchback) | Same mechanical package; more practical loading; easier to find | No separate boot; less appealing to three-box market preference |
| Opel Corsa A | More modern (introduced 1982); wider dealer network; more power | Post-dates the Derby; different market segment by launch |
| Renault 5 | More sporting character; available in GTL/Gordini variants; wider range | Hatchback-only in most markets; French brand network in Azerbaijan is minimal |
The VW Derby makes no practical sense as a daily driver in Azerbaijan — parts are scarce, power is very modest, and the driving experience reflects its 1970s origins. However, as a preservation project or a piece of Volkswagen heritage, a clean Derby is a charming and unusual acquisition. If you have a passion for early VW models and access to a specialist who can source parts from Germany, the Derby rewards patient ownership with its simplicity and historical significance.
