China's electrified Bora sedan — FAW-Volkswagen's MQB-based EV delivering zero-emission urban mobility at competitive pricing.
The Volkswagen e-Bora is an all-electric sedan developed and produced exclusively for the Chinese market through the FAW-Volkswagen joint venture. Launched in 2018, the e-Bora is based on the MQB platform — the same underpinning used by the combustion-engined Bora sedan — adapted to accommodate an electric powertrain in a broadly similar approach to the e-Golf. The electric motor produces 100 kW (136 hp) and 290 Nm of torque, delivering strong instant torque and smooth acceleration characteristic of electric drivetrains. The original 2018 e-Bora was fitted with a 53 kWh lithium-ion battery pack providing a claimed NEDC range of approximately 280 km — roughly 220–240 km in real-world mixed driving. The 2021 update introduced minor software and thermal management improvements.
The e-Bora is sold exclusively through FAW-Volkswagen's dealer network in China and has never been officially exported to Azerbaijan or other CIS markets. However, a small number of examples have appeared in Azerbaijan as grey-market imports, typically brought via China-to-Russia trade routes. The e-Bora supports DC fast charging at up to 40 kW (0–80% in approximately 55 minutes) and AC onboard charging at 7.2 kW. The interior is largely shared with the combustion Bora, offering a familiar and well-finished cabin for Chinese-market expectations. Charging infrastructure in Azerbaijan is limited but expanding in Baku, which is the primary practical consideration for any grey-market e-Bora owner.
| Variant | Powertrain | Power | 0–100 km/h | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| e-Bora (2018–2020) | 100 kW PMSM, 53 kWh battery | 136 hp / 290 Nm | 9.6s | Urban commuting within 200 km daily range; early adopters |
| e-Bora (2021+ refresh) | 100 kW PMSM, improved thermal management | 136 hp / 290 Nm | 9.6s | Improved cold-weather battery performance; marginally better real-world range |
| Model | Strength | Compromise |
|---|---|---|
| BYD Qin EV | Larger battery options; longer range; stronger domestic China support network | Less premium brand perception; less familiar to VW-brand buyers |
| Nissan Leaf (e+) | Globally distributed; CHAdeMO fast charging; stronger resale in some markets | Higher price point; no dedicated battery heating on base models |
| SAIC MG 5 EV | Larger 61 kWh battery; exported to Europe with better service networks | Less established brand trust; Volkswagen interior quality perceived higher |
The e-Bora is a competent, well-built electric sedan that benefits from VW's MQB engineering rigour. For buyers in Azerbaijan, the primary challenges are charging infrastructure compatibility and the absence of official dealer support. If you have access to home charging and a trusted EV technician in Baku, the e-Bora's low running costs and smooth electric performance make it an attractive proposition — but only after carefully verifying battery health and charging compatibility.
