The Volkswagen Taro was a rebadged Toyota Hilux pickup truck produced under a VW-Toyota agreement from 1989 to 1997, sold in Europe as Volkswagen's only compact pickup of that era.
The Volkswagen Taro was a pickup truck produced from 1989 to 1997 under a Volkswagen-Toyota joint venture agreement. A version of the Toyota Hilux N50/N80 platform fitted with a VW grille and badging, it was built in Japan and sold in Germany and other European markets. Available in single cab, extra cab, and double cab body variants. It was the only light pickup truck that Volkswagen sold in Europe.
Technical specifications are based on Toyota Hilux engines: 2.2L petrol (90 hp), 2.4L petrol (100 hp), and 2.4L diesel (73 hp). A 5-speed manual gearbox was standard. Optional part-time 4WD all-wheel drive was available. In terms of parts, there is 100% compatibility with the Toyota Hilux N50/N80 — a major advantage for servicing.
The Taro is extremely rare in Azerbaijan — as a European market pickup, it was never officially imported to the country. However, since Toyota Hilux parts are 100% compatible, service options exist for keeping this vehicle operational. The Taro holds historical value from a collector and classic truck perspective. There was no official VW-Toyota joint sales network in Azerbaijan.
| Variant | Powertrain | Power | 0–100 km/h | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Taro 2.2 Petrol Single Cab | 2.2L petrol, 5-speed manual, RWD | 90 hp | 13–15s | Entry level; light cargo transport; fuel economy; work tool |
| Taro 2.4 Petrol Double Cab | 2.4L petrol, 5-speed manual, 4WD optional | 100 hp | 12–14s | Family pickup; double cab comfort; optional 4WD; versatile use |
| Taro 2.4 Diesel | 2.4L diesel, 5-speed manual, RWD or 4WD | 73 hp | 14–16s | Fuel economy; long-distance cargo; diesel durability |
| Model | Strength | Compromise |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota Hilux (N50/N80) | Essentially the same vehicle — identical platform, engine, parts; Toyota brand more recognised | Taro was specifically optimised for European market under VW brand; has rare collector value |
| Mitsubishi L200 | Wider European distribution; Mitsubishi network; more variant choices | Taro/Hilux platform durability is considered superior to L200; parts compatibility is clearer |
The Volkswagen Taro is a unique product of the VW-Toyota joint venture — the only light pickup that Volkswagen sold in Europe. It combines Toyota Hilux reliability with VW branding. In Azerbaijan, servicing is feasible thanks to Toyota Hilux parts compatibility. However, being a rare classic model makes buying and selling difficult. For practical pickup use in Azerbaijan, buying a Toyota Hilux directly is more appropriate.
