The Volkswagen Type 3 was VW's upmarket successor to the Type 1 Beetle — offering a larger, more refined body in notchback (1500/1600), Fastback, Squareback (Variant wagon), and Karmann convertible styles, with an innovative flat 'pancake' air-cooled engine.
The Volkswagen Type 3 is a larger, more luxurious VW model produced between 1961–1973. It was developed as the upmarket version of the Type 1 Beetle. Body types include notchback sedan (1500/1600 Sedan), Fastback (1500/1600 TL), Squareback (Variant wagon), and Karmann convertible (very rare). A rear air-cooled "pancake" (flat) engine was used (1,493cc–1,584cc, 34–65 hp) — this engine, being flatter than the Beetle's, created a front luggage space.
The Type 3 was the first VW model in VW history to have petrol injection (Bosch D-Jetronic, 1968) — in the Notchback 1600 TLE version. This feature made the Type 3 one of the most technologically advanced VW models of its era. It was also exported to the US market (the 1500/1600 Squareback was very popular in the USA). The cessation of production is related to VW's transition to water-cooled engine models.
In Azerbaijan, the Type 3 is an extremely rare classic car. Available examples are usually in fully restored form. In the collector market, the Type 3 Fastback is particularly popular. It can be obtained through the international VW classic club network. Finding a technician who can service this model in Azerbaijan is very difficult.
