Volkswagen Type 4

Sedan / Wagon 1972–1974 68–85 hp Petrol (Air-cooled)

The Volkswagen Type 4 (411/412) was VW's most sophisticated air-cooled car — a larger, more refined rear-engined sedan and wagon introduced in 1968, with fuel-injected variants, MacPherson strut front suspension, and the largest air-cooled VW engine at 1,795cc.

Overview

The Volkswagen Type 4 is VW's most sophisticated air-cooled model. Two versions exist: Type 411 (1968–1972) — 2+2-door sedan, 3+2-door sedan, 3-door Variant (wagon); Type 412 (1972–1974) — 2-door sedan, 4-door sedan, 3-door Variant. Engine options include a rear air-cooled 1,679cc (68 hp) carburettor and a 1,795cc (80–85 hp) Bosch D-Jetronic injection.

Technical features of the Type 4: MacPherson strut front suspension (more modern than the Beetle), front disc brakes (a big bonus — rare for the era), spacious 4-seat cabin, standard front trunk with full luggage capacity (pancake engine at rear). The Bosch D-Jetronic injected engine was considered powerful at 85 hp for its era. Despite all this, the Type 4 could not match the Type 1's popularity and production ended in 1974.

In Azerbaijan, the Type 4 is one of the rarest models. Only a few hundred fully restored examples exist worldwide. In the collector market, the Type 4 Variant (wagon) is particularly sought after. Finding this model in Azerbaijan is almost impossible. It can be obtained through international classic car auctions and the VW classic club network.

Ownership Cost Estimator (Azerbaijan)

  • Annual fuel use: 230.0 L/year
  • Annual fuel cost: $173
  • Total annual ownership estimate: $3373
  • Average monthly ownership estimate: $281
  • Extremely rare classic car. The Bosch D-Jetronic injection system requires specialised electrical engineering knowledge — there are no specialists in this field in Azerbaijan.
  • The 1,795cc "fan" engine requires separate service diagnostics as it is larger than the Beetle's. Spare parts are obtained from VW classic stores in Germany and the USA.

Maintenance & Service in Azerbaijan

  • The MacPherson front suspension system is more modern than the Beetle's — ball joints and shock absorbers should be checked. Finding these parts in Azerbaijan is difficult.
  • The front disc brake system can be mechanically serviced. However, Type 4-specific brake disc/caliper parts are rare items to decipher.

Used Buying Checklist — Type 4

  • Check the wear of front disc brakes — calipers sometimes cause approach problems.
  • Check whether the MacPherson suspension ball joints are loose — this movement can be identified at most VW service centres in Azerbaijan.
  • In the injected model (LE), check with a diagnostic tool that the D-Jetronic system is fully operational.

Volkswagen Type 4 FAQ — Azerbaijan Buyers

Q: Why was the VW Type 4 unsuccessful?
The Type 4's main problem was not being sufficiently different from competitors in the market of its era. Water-cooled European rivals (Citroën GS, Renault 16, Fiat 124) offered more modern FWD technology, more spacious cabins, and better economy. The Type 4's rear-engine air-cooled technology was already considered outdated. Production ended in 1974, after which VW released the water-cooled Golf/Passat models.
Q: Does the Type 4 have collector value?
Yes, especially among specialist VW classic collectors. A complete original Type 411 LE (injected) or 412 Variant example can be valued at $15,000–$40,000. Being a rare model with few examples worldwide increases its value.

Should You Buy? — Volkswagen Type 4

For VW technical history specialists — extremely rare, but moderate collector value.

The Volkswagen Type 4 (411/412) represents the peak of VW's air-cooled technology — with MacPherson suspension, front disc brakes, D-Jetronic injection, and the largest 1,795cc engine. However, its commercial failure has made this model extremely rare. Finding it in Azerbaijan is almost impossible. It holds technical interest for specialists of classic VW history.
