Origins of KG Mobility
The company now known as KG Mobility traces its origins to 1954, when Ha Dong-hwan Motor Workshop was established in Seoul, South Korea. The company progressed through several ownerships and corporate transformations — becoming SsangYong Motor Company in 1988 and establishing itself as South Korea's specialist in SUVs and off-road vehicles. The name SsangYong means 'twin dragons' in Korean, reflecting the company's ambitions as a dual-capability vehicle manufacturer. Through the 1990s and 2000s, SsangYong developed a range of SUVs and off-road vehicles that competed with imports from Land Rover, Toyota, and Mercedes-Benz.
SsangYong's history was marked by financial difficulty and ownership changes — acquired by Daewoo in 1997, then by SAIC Motor of China in 2004, and subsequently entering and emerging from bankruptcy multiple times. Despite these corporate challenges, SsangYong maintained its product development capabilities and continued producing vehicles of genuine quality and capability. The company's association with Mercedes-Benz technology — through a licensing agreement that gave SsangYong access to Mercedes-Benz engine and chassis technology — provided its vehicles with engineering credibility that distinguished them in the Korean and export markets.
In 2021, SsangYong entered bankruptcy protection for the second time, before being acquired by KG Group — a Korean conglomerate — in 2022. Following the acquisition, the company announced its rebranding as KG Mobility in 2023, marking a new chapter in its corporate history while retaining the product heritage, manufacturing facilities, and engineering capabilities developed over nearly 70 years. The rebranding signalled KG Group's commitment to transforming the company into a competitive force in the electric and hybrid vehicle market.

KG Mobility in Azerbaijan
SsangYong (now KG Mobility) vehicles have been sold in Azerbaijan and neighbouring markets in the South Caucasus region. The Rexton in particular attracted attention from Azerbaijani buyers seeking the combination of luxury SUV capability and off-road credentials at pricing below the European luxury SUV brands. SsangYong's dealership presence in the region has provided access to parts and service support.
As KG Mobility, the brand is at an early stage of establishing its new identity in international markets. For Azerbaijani buyers who valued the former SsangYong range — particularly the Rexton's combination of luxury and capability — KG Mobility's continued development of its SUV and pickup range offers the prospect of continued access to Korean-engineered off-road vehicles at competitive price points.
Why KG Mobility Matters
- Korean off-road heritage: KG Mobility (formerly SsangYong) represents South Korea's specialist contribution to the global SUV and off-road vehicle market — bringing Korean engineering quality and value to vehicle segments traditionally dominated by British (Land Rover), Japanese (Toyota), and American (Jeep) specialists.
- Mercedes-Benz technology legacy: The former SsangYong's technology agreement with Mercedes-Benz provided its vehicles with engineering foundations derived from one of the world's most respected automotive engineers — a credential that gave SsangYong/KG Mobility vehicles a technical quality advantage over many competitors in their price segment.
- Electrification pivot: KG Mobility's rebranding signals a serious commitment to electrification — the Torres EVX representing the first tangible result of the company's investment in electric vehicle technology under its new ownership and corporate identity.
- Value luxury SUV positioning: KG Mobility's flagship Rexton offers luxury SUV capability at pricing that undercuts European equivalents significantly — demonstrating the Korean automotive industry's ability to deliver genuine quality and feature content at prices that challenge the established European luxury manufacturers.
