Origins & Heritage
Kia began not as a car company but as a manufacturer of steel tubing and bicycle parts. Founded in 1944 in Seoul, the company's name — Ki-a (起亞) — translates as "rising from Asia," a phrase that would prove prophetic over the following eight decades.
The transition to automobiles came gradually. Kia began assembling motorcycles in 1957, then light trucks in 1962. Its first passenger car, the Brisa, debuted in 1974 — a compact saloon that brought personal mobility to a generation of Korean families during the country's rapid industrialisation.
Financial crisis in the late 1990s led to Hyundai acquiring a controlling stake in 1998, creating the Hyundai Motor Group — today the world's third-largest automotive conglomerate. Rather than absorbing Kia's identity, Hyundai allowed it to develop a distinct character: where Hyundai pursued reliability and value, Kia pursued design and emotional appeal.
The appointment of Peter Schreyer as Chief Design Officer in 2006 — the first European to hold such a role at a Korean carmaker — proved transformative. Schreyer's "tiger nose" grille became an instantly recognisable signature, and Kia's design awards began accumulating rapidly.

Technology & Innovation
Kia's investment in electrification is backed by the E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform) — a purpose-built EV architecture shared with Hyundai's IONIQ line. The 800V charging system enables ultra-rapid charging unavailable on most competitors' platforms, while Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality turns any Kia EV into a mobile power source.
The brand's digital experience centres on the "Panoramic Curved Display" — a seamlessly integrated dual-screen cockpit spanning the full dashboard width. Over-the-air software updates, connected car services, and AI-powered driver assistance systems arrive standard on mid-grade trims, a specification level that rivals price significantly above Kia.

Kia in Azerbaijan
Kia has established itself as one of the top-selling foreign brands in Azerbaijan, with the Sportage consistently ranking among the most popular compact SUVs in Baku. The brand's combination of bold design, competitive pricing, and improving quality perception makes it an attractive choice for first-time new car buyers and those trading up from older domestic vehicles.
