Li Auto is a leading Chinese electric vehicle startup founded in 2015, specialising exclusively in extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) — a format combining a small combustion engine as an electricity generator with an all-electric drivetrain. Listed on NASDAQ and Hong Kong Stock Exchange, Li Auto has become one of China's most successful EV companies, achieving profitability ahead of most global EV peers and selling over 300,000 vehicles annually by 2023.
Li Auto was founded in 2015 by Li Xiang — a tech entrepreneur and automotive blogger who had previously founded Autohome, China's largest automotive information platform. Li Xiang's insight was that Chinese EV buyers in 2015–2019 faced a fundamental dilemma: full battery EVs offered insufficient range and charging infrastructure was inadequate, but plug-in hybrids were either expensive or technically compromised. His answer was the extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) — a car with a full EV driving experience but a combustion engine generator that eliminated range anxiety entirely.
The Li One SUV, launched in 2019, proved the concept brilliantly. A large, well-specified, six-seat family SUV with 800 km of total range, it targeted the premium family SUV segment — BMW X5, Audi Q7, Volvo XC90 — at significantly lower prices. The Li One became China's best-selling premium SUV in its price category, demonstrating that Chinese buyers would enthusiastically embrace domestic EV brands if the product was right.
Li Auto went public on NASDAQ in July 2020 and subsequently on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, using the capital to expand its model range rapidly. The L-series (L6, L7, L8, L9) launched from 2022 brought a complete family of EREV SUVs covering different sizes and price points. Li Auto also announced a pure BEV (battery-electric) product line for 2024–2025, signalling the brand's evolution beyond its EREV-only origins.
Li Auto's EREV SUVs have redefined expectations for Chinese premium vehicles, combining impressive dimensions, premium interior appointments, and the freedom from range anxiety that makes them ideal for families.

Li Auto's product family currently spans four EREV SUV models at different price and size points, with pure BEV models joining the range from 2024 — all sharing the brand's signature large-format EREV drivetrain and premium interior philosophy.
Li Auto's EREV technology is more sophisticated than a conventional range-extender. The dedicated 1.5T four-cylinder engine operates exclusively as a generator — always at its optimal efficiency point — charging a 40 kWh battery pack that powers the all-electric drivetrain. The result is full EV driving character in daily use (smooth, silent, immediate torque) without the range constraints of pure BEVs. The MEGA BEV models use an 800V electrical architecture for ultra-fast charging — adding 500 km of range in just 12 minutes from a compatible 800V charger.
Li Auto has begun attracting interest in Azerbaijan as information about the brand's remarkable sales success and product quality reaches buyers through online channels and the broader Chinese automotive media ecosystem. The EREV technology is particularly relevant for Azerbaijan's current infrastructure stage: buyers can enjoy electric driving efficiency in urban Baku while the range-extender generator eliminates range anxiety on longer inter-city or mountain journeys where charging infrastructure remains sparse.
As Li Auto pursues international market expansion — initially focused on the Middle East and parts of Europe — Azerbaijan is well-positioned geographically to benefit from the brand's growing distribution network. The L-series SUVs' combination of genuine premium positioning, six-seat family practicality, and EREV technology represents a uniquely compelling proposition for the Azerbaijani family car market.
