Origins & Heritage
Lucid Motors was founded in 2007 — initially as Atieva — by Bernard Tse and Sam Weng in Menlo Park, California. Originally conceived as a battery technology company, Atieva pivoted to full vehicle development in 2016 under the leadership of Peter Rawlinson, former Chief Vehicle Engineer for the Tesla Model S.
The company rebranded as Lucid Motors in 2016, reflecting ambitions to create the world's most advanced electric vehicles. The name reflects clarity and illumination — interiors like 'a glass house' with panoramic glazing, and exterior forms using light reflection for visual impact.
Lucid's critical breakthrough was an electric motor-inverter-gearbox unit achieving unprecedented power density. This allows the Air to use larger battery packs while preserving interior space. Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund became majority shareholder in 2018, providing capital for Arizona manufacturing.
