Japan / USA Founded 1986 Honda's Precision Craft NSX Supercar Heritage

Acura pioneered the Japanese luxury category when it launched as the world's first Japanese luxury automotive brand in 1986 — proving that precision engineering, racing DNA, and refined appointments could be combined under a name entirely separate from its mass-market parent.

Origins & Heritage

Acura holds a unique place in automotive history: it was the world's first Japanese luxury brand, predating both Lexus and Infiniti by three years. When Honda launched Acura in the United States on 27 March 1986, the automotive establishment was sceptical — could a Japanese brand that had built its reputation on practical economy cars credibly offer luxury and performance vehicles? The Acura Legend saloon and Integra coupe answered that question definitively and immediately.

The Acura name itself carries precise meaning — derived from the Latin 'acu' (with precision or skill) — a deliberate signal of Honda's engineering philosophy applied to the premium segment. The brand's early success, particularly with the Integra and the groundbreaking NSX supercar, established a reputation for combining Honda's engine mastery with European-challenging dynamics at prices that offered outstanding value.

The 1990 NSX was Acura's defining moment — a mid-engined aluminium monocoque supercar developed with input from Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna. At Senna's suggestion, the NSX's steering and suspension were revised to be more communicative for road drivers. The result was a car that could match Ferrari 348 performance while starting reliably every morning, requiring no specialist maintenance, and selling at less than half the Ferrari's price. It reset what a supercar was expected to be.

SH-AWD — Super Handling All-Wheel Drive

Acura's most significant engineering contribution to the automotive mainstream is the Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system, introduced in 2004. Unlike conventional AWD systems that merely distribute torque front-to-rear, SH-AWD actively distributes torque between the left and right rear wheels — sending more power to the outside wheel during cornering to create an oversteering effect that tightens the car's line mid-corner. This torque vectoring capability was previously only achievable with complex active differentials.

  • SH-AWD torque vectoring — active left-right rear torque distribution for sharper cornering without understeer
  • NSX Hybrid SH-AWD — three electric motors provide individual front-wheel torque vectoring with zero mechanical linkage
  • Precision All-Wheel Steer — rear wheel steering on TLX and MDX for reduced turning radius and high-speed stability
  • ELS Studio Audio — engineered by Grammy-winning producer Elliot Scheiner for each specific Acura cabin
  • AcuraWatch — comprehensive Honda Sensing driver assistance suite including LKAS and Adaptive Cruise

Acura in Azerbaijan

Acura occupies a niche but respected position in Azerbaijan's automotive market. The MDX SUV is the most commonly encountered Acura in Baku, imported through the North American market and appreciated for its spacious three-row layout, premium appointments, and the reputation for Honda-derived reliability that underlies the entire brand. The TLX saloon attracts younger executive buyers seeking sport-focused luxury.

Acura's Honda engineering foundation means that maintenance parts and technical expertise are widely available in Azerbaijan, reducing the ownership concerns that sometimes accompany more exotic luxury brands. The combination of Japanese reliability, engaging dynamics through SH-AWD, and competitive pricing compared to German alternatives makes Acura an increasingly compelling proposition for discerning Azerbaijani buyers.

Why Choose Acura?

  • SH-AWD torque vectoring: The most sophisticated AWD system in the mainstream luxury segment — delivers genuine sports car cornering dynamics in family vehicles.
