Geely is China's most globally ambitious automaker — a company that began building refrigerators and motorcycles in Zhejiang Province and grew to own Volvo Cars, Polestar, Lotus, and a stake in Mercedes-Benz, while simultaneously developing one of the world's most advanced electric vehicle programmes.
Geely Automobile Holdings was founded in 1986 in Taizhou, Zhejiang Province by Li Shufu — a self-made entrepreneur who began by manufacturing refrigerator components before pivoting to motorcycles, and then, against the warnings of industry experts, to automobiles. His first car, launched in 1998, was a basic economy vehicle — but it was affordable, locally produced, and it moved. Li Shufu famously described cars as 'four wheels and a sofa' — a deliberately provocative statement from a man who would go on to own some of the world's most sophisticated automotive brands.
The transformative moment in Geely's history came in 2010, when the company completed its $1.8 billion acquisition of Volvo Cars from Ford Motor Company — the most significant overseas acquisition ever made by a Chinese automaker at that point. Rather than diluting the Swedish brand, Li Shufu operated Volvo with full independence, invested heavily in its engineering facilities, and used the partnership to transfer advanced safety and electrification technologies into Geely's own vehicles.
Today, Geely Holding Group owns Geely Auto, Volvo Cars, Polestar, Lynk & Co, Zeekr, Proton, Lotus Cars, LEVC, and a 9.7% stake in Mercedes-Benz — a portfolio spanning budget economy to ultra-luxury supercar that few companies anywhere in the world have assembled.
Geely's rapid rise from a small Chinese manufacturer to a global automotive force — owning Volvo, Lotus, and Polestar — is reflected in models that combine technology, value, and growing international ambition.

Geely has built one of the automotive industry's most sophisticated technology portfolios through organic R&D investment and strategic acquisitions. The CMA platform — co-developed with Volvo — is shared across Geely, Volvo, Polestar, and Lynk & Co vehicles, delivering premium engineering at Chinese manufacturing efficiency.
Geely's SEA electric platform underpins multiple premium EV brands including Zeekr. The 800-volt architecture enables ultra-fast charging, and Geely also operates its own commercial satellite constellation to support connected vehicle services — a level of vertical integration few automotive groups have matched.
Geely has established a growing presence in Azerbaijan, with the Coolray compact SUV proving particularly popular for its competitive pricing, turbocharged performance, and premium interior features. Azerbaijan's market has historically been receptive to brands that offer strong specification-to-price ratios, and Geely's improvement in build quality and design over the past decade has positioned it well.
The Emgrand continues to serve budget-conscious family buyers, while newer models like the Tugella and Preface attract buyers seeking premium appointments without European brand price premiums. As Geely expands its service network and parts availability in the region, owner confidence is growing — making the brand one to watch in Azerbaijan's competitive new car market.
