The GWM Story
Great Wall Motor (GWM) began in 1984 in Baoding, Hebei province, as a small used-car repair workshop. Founder Wei Jianjun's early decision to specialise exclusively in SUVs — at a time when most Chinese brands were chasing sedans — proved to be one of the most prescient strategic bets in the industry's history.
The launch of the Haval sub-brand in the 2000s transformed GWM into China's undisputed SUV leader. The Haval H6 went on to become China's best-selling SUV for over a decade straight — an achievement no rival has matched since.
