MINI

United Kingdom Original 1959 Monte Carlo Rally Legend All-Electric Future

The original MINI of 1959 was the most space-efficient car ever designed — 80% of its footprint devoted to passengers and luggage, with only 20% given to the engine and wheels. That philosophy of maximising the relationship between space and joy continues today in BMW Group's reimagined MINI.

Origins & Heritage

The original MINI was born from the Suez Crisis. In 1956, the British oil supply crisis created urgent demand for small, fuel-efficient vehicles, and the British Motor Corporation commissioned engineer Alec Issigonis to design the smallest practical car possible. Issigonis's solution was revolutionary: he turned the engine sideways — mounting it transversely in the nose — and placed the four wheels at the extreme corners of the car's body. This created a vehicle just 3.05 metres long that could carry four adults and their luggage in genuine comfort. The original Mini's layout is the template for virtually every small front-wheel-drive car built since.

The Mini became more than a car — it became a cultural symbol. In the 1960s, it was adopted by musicians, artists, and designers as the vehicle of cool Britain: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Peter Sellers, and the Rolling Stones all owned Minis. Three consecutive Monte Carlo Rally victories in the hands of Finnish rally legend Timo Mäkinen, Rauno Aaltonen, and Paddy Hopkirk cemented the Cooper S variant's motorsport legend permanently.

The modern MINI was reborn in 2001 under BMW Group ownership — designed to capture the original's spirit with contemporary engineering, safety, and quality standards. Today, MINI is transitioning to a fully electric lineup while preserving the character and joy that has made it one of automotive history's most enduring icons.

Go-Kart Handling Philosophy

MINI's 'go-kart feeling' is more than a marketing phrase — it is an engineering objective that shapes every suspension tuning decision across the range. MINI cars are set up with stiffer-than-average springs, quick steering racks, and a notably direct response between driver input and vehicle reaction.

  • Go-kart handling tuning — stiffer springs, rapid steering rack, flat cornering attitude standard across the range
  • Adaptive suspension — sport mode firms dampers, sharpens throttle and steering response
  • John Cooper Works package — Brembo four-piston brakes, adaptive suspension, and mechanical LSD
  • EV performance advantage — lower centre of gravity and instant torque improve go-kart feeling in electric models
  • Unique personalisation — roof colours, door mirrors, interior lighting packs — over 10 million combinations possible
