SSC North America

United States Founded 1999 Hypercars & Supercars Richland, Washington

SSC North America — formerly Shelby SuperCars — is an American hypercar manufacturer that built one of the world's fastest production cars. Founded by Jerod Shelby in 1999, SSC achieved global recognition when the Ultimate Aero TT broke the Guinness World Record for the fastest production car in 2007, reaching 412 km/h and dethroning the Bugatti Veyron.

Origins & Heritage

SSC North America was founded in 1999 by Jerod Shelby — no relation to Carroll Shelby of Shelby Mustang fame — with the specific ambition of building an American hypercar capable of competing with, and surpassing, the world's fastest production vehicles. Operating from Richland, Washington, SSC began development of its first vehicle, the SSC Aero, which was introduced to the public in 2004. The Aero was an entirely bespoke design — a mid-engine sports car with a hand-built aluminium chassis, fibreglass and carbon fibre body, and a twin-turbocharged American V8 engine.

The defining moment in SSC's history came on 13 September 2007, when an SSC Ultimate Aero TT achieved a two-way average speed of 412.28 km/h on a closed section of highway near Wabash, Washington — surpassing the Bugatti Veyron's 406.47 km/h record and claiming the Guinness World Record for the fastest production car. The record stood until 2010 when Bugatti reclaimed it with the Veyron Super Sport. SSC's record was a landmark for American automotive engineering — demonstrating that a small, independent manufacturer from Washington State could build a vehicle that outperformed the products of established European hypercar manufacturers.

SSC's successor to the Ultimate Aero was the Tuatara, unveiled in concept form in 2011 and entering production in 2019. Named after a New Zealand reptile known for its speed, the Tuatara is powered by a twin-turbocharged 5.9L V8 engine producing 1,750 horsepower on E85 ethanol fuel, with a theoretical top speed exceeding 500 km/h. A disputed speed run in 2020 claimed a record of 532 km/h — though the result was later withdrawn after verification concerns. The Tuatara remains one of the most extreme production cars ever built, confirming SSC's position among the world's most ambitious hypercar manufacturers.

Key Milestones

1999
SSC (Shelby SuperCars) founded by Jerod Shelby in Richland, Washington — dedicated to building an American hypercar to rival European and Japanese extremes.
2004
SSC Aero revealed to the public — a twin-turbocharged mid-engine sports car with hand-built aluminium chassis and American V8 power.
2007
SSC Ultimate Aero TT sets Guinness World Record for fastest production car at 412.28 km/h — surpassing the Bugatti Veyron and claiming global recognition for American hypercar engineering.
2013
SSC rebrands as SSC North America — distancing itself from any association with the Shelby name and establishing independent brand identity.
2020
SSC Tuatara production begins — twin-turbo 5.9L V8 producing 1,750 hp; one of the most powerful production cars ever built; speed run controversy leads to retested results.
2023
SSC Tuatara deliveries continue to global customers — production limited to approximately 100 examples; each car hand-built to individual specification.

Iconic Models in Pictures

SSC's design philosophy prioritises aerodynamic function over decoration — the Tuatara's dramatic exterior is shaped entirely by the requirements of achieving extreme speed with stability, producing one of the most visually arresting American cars ever built.

Model Lineup

SSC has produced a small number of models across its history, each representing the maximum performance achievable from American engineering at its time of production — vehicles of record-breaking ambition rather than commercial volume.

SSC Tuatara (2019–present)
The Tuatara is SSC's ultimate expression — a mid-engine hypercar with a twin-turbocharged 5.9L V8 producing 1,350 hp on premium fuel or 1,750 hp on E85; carbon fibre monocoque chassis; theoretical top speed exceeding 500 km/h; limited to approximately 100 examples with hand-built assembly in Richland, Washington.
SSC Ultimate Aero TT (2006–2013)
The Ultimate Aero TT was the record-breaking model — twin-turbocharged V8 producing 1,183 hp; Guinness World Record holder for fastest production car from 2007 to 2010 at 412.28 km/h; only 30 examples built; regarded as one of the most significant American performance cars of the 2000s.
SSC Aero (2004–2013)
The original Aero established SSC as a credible hypercar manufacturer — twin-turbocharged V8, mid-engine layout, and hand-built construction that demonstrated serious performance engineering from a small American operation; fewer than 25 examples produced.
SSC Tuatara Ageless (Special Edition)
SSC has produced limited special edition variants of the Tuatara for specific customers — featuring bespoke paint, unique interior materials, and customer-specified performance tuning; each example is effectively a one-off creation within the Tuatara production run.

Engineering & Technology

SSC's engineering philosophy is single-minded in its pursuit of maximum speed — every component decision is made in service of achieving the lowest possible weight, the highest possible power output, and the aerodynamic efficiency required to reach and maintain extreme velocities.

  • Twin-turbocharged flat-plane V8 — the Tuatara uses a 5.9L twin-turbo V8 designed in-house; flat-plane crankshaft for higher revving capability; produces 1,750 hp on E85 — among the highest outputs of any production engine
  • Carbon fibre monocoque chassis — the Tuatara features a bespoke carbon fibre tub; body panels, floor, and structural components are all carbon fibre; total weight under 1,250 kg despite extreme power output
  • Active aerodynamics — the Tuatara features adjustable aerodynamic elements including a deployable rear wing that increases downforce at speed and reduces drag at maximum velocity
  • Seven-speed automated manual transmission — CIMA sequential gearbox with paddle shifters; no traditional automatic converter; shifts in under 100 milliseconds for maximum acceleration efficiency
  • Speed record heritage — SSC holds the distinction of having produced the Guinness-certified fastest production car in history (2007 Ultimate Aero TT); all subsequent models are developed with world speed record capability as a primary design target

SSC in Azerbaijan

SSC vehicles are among the rarest cars anywhere in the world — with fewer than 100 examples of the Tuatara and fewer than 60 examples of all previous models combined, the probability of encountering one in Azerbaijan is exceptionally low. However, the brand's record-breaking history and extreme performance credentials make it one of the most discussed hypercar names among Azerbaijani automotive enthusiasts who follow the international extreme performance car scene.

For Azerbaijani collectors with interest in the absolute pinnacle of American performance engineering, SSC represents a compelling chapter in automotive history — the story of a small Washington State manufacturer that built a car faster than Bugatti using American parts and American engineering. The Ultimate Aero TT in particular holds permanent historical significance as a Guinness World Record holder, giving any surviving example an unassailable place in automotive history.

Why is SSC Significant?

  • Guinness World Record holder: The SSC Ultimate Aero TT holds the Guinness World Record for fastest production car (2007–2010) — a distinction that gives the brand permanent historical significance regardless of subsequent record attempts.
  • American engineering at its limit: SSC demonstrated that American engineers, working with American V8 technology and relatively modest resources, could build a car that outperformed the products of Bugatti — one of the most well-funded manufacturers in the world.
  • Extreme rarity: Fewer than 100 Tuatara examples will ever be built — combined with fewer than 60 earlier models, SSC vehicles are among the rarest production cars in existence; any example is a significant collector asset.
  • Tuatara's engineering ambition: The 1,750 hp twin-turbo V8 in the Tuatara is one of the most powerful production engines ever built — an engineering achievement that would be remarkable regardless of the vehicle it powers.
  • Independent American spirit: SSC's story — a small team from Washington State building the world's fastest car — captures the essence of American entrepreneurial ambition; it's a narrative that resonates with automotive enthusiasts worldwide.
