Derways is one of several regional Russian automotive manufacturers that emerged in the early 2000s as the Russian government encouraged domestic vehicle production.

The company's initial strategy was based on CKD (Completely Knocked Down) assembly of Chinese vehicle designs, which allowed Derways to bring vehicles to market quickly while developing its own engineering and manufacturing capabilities.
