Origins & Heritage
LADA (VAZ) was established in 1966 in Togliatti, Russia as a Soviet manufacturer tasked with producing affordable, simple "people's cars" for Soviet workers. The 1970 LADA 1200 — a licence-built Fiat variant — became the affordable-car paradigm for the Soviet Union — enabling every Soviet family to aspire to car ownership within modest budgets.
After the LADA 1200 (known as LADA Klassika, LADA 2101, variants), the 1977 LADA Niva arrived — the first mass-produced pure off-road vehicle — symbolising Soviet capacity for territorial mobility. By the 1980s, LADA production volumes reached millions — the marque became the cultural centrepiece of Soviet working-class aspiration.
Following Soviet collapse in 1991, LADA (VAZ's official brand name) continued motion across post-Soviet territories — Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan as the most popular affordable family car. As Chinese and Indian marques compete in post-Soviet markets, LADA retains "national driver" status.
