Origins & Heritage
Mitsubishi's automotive story begins with a corporate heritage of extraordinary breadth. The Mitsubishi zaibatsu had its origins in the shipping ventures of Yataro Iwasaki in the 1870s. The three-diamond logo represents three interlocking rhombuses symbolising reliability, integrity, and corporate togetherness. By the early twentieth century, Mitsubishi had expanded into shipbuilding, aircraft manufacturing, and heavy engineering, and in 1917 produced Japan's first series-production automobile: the Mitsubishi Model A.
Mitsubishi Motors Corporation — formally established in 1970 — inherited both the industrial engineering culture of its conglomerate parent and a strong motorsport ambition. The Lancer was Mitsubishi's rallying weapon: from the Lancer 1600 GSR that won the 1974 Southern Cross Rally to the legendary Lancer Evolution series (1992–2016) — a turbocharged all-wheel-drive performance saloon that won multiple World Rally Championship rounds.
Mitsubishi's most prescient engineering achievement was the Outlander PHEV, launched in 2013 as the world's first mass-production plug-in hybrid SUV. While competitors debated whether plug-in hybrid technology was viable for mainstream buyers, Mitsubishi sold over 200,000 Outlander PHEVs in its first three years — proving that everyday family buyers would embrace electrified drivetrains when the product was practical, affordable, and genuinely useful.

Mitsubishi in Azerbaijan
Mitsubishi has a long and well-established presence in Azerbaijan. The L200 pickup and Pajero Sport SUV are particularly popular with buyers requiring genuine working capability, while the Outlander PHEV appeals to urban professionals interested in reducing fuel costs. Azerbaijan's geography — combining urban environments with mountain roads and rural terrain — suits Mitsubishi's all-terrain engineering philosophy well.
The Outlander PHEV benefits from Azerbaijan's growing EV charging infrastructure and government incentives for electrified vehicles. The ability to drive electrically in Baku for daily commutes while retaining full range for longer journeys addresses the specific needs of Azerbaijani buyers navigating between urban and intercity travel.
