GAC Group (Guangzhou Automobile Group) is one of China's largest state-owned automotive manufacturers, operating joint ventures with Toyota, Honda, Stellantis, and Mitsubishi while simultaneously building its own-branded Trumpchi passenger cars and AION electric vehicle range. Founded in 2000 and headquartered in Guangzhou, GAC has grown into a global automotive force producing over two million vehicles annually.
GAC Group was established in 2000 by the Guangzhou municipal government with the strategic goal of building Guangdong Province into one of China's premier automotive manufacturing hubs. The company's approach was built around joint ventures with world-class international partners: GAC-Toyota launched in 2004, GAC-Honda was established in 1998 before the parent company's reorganisation, and subsequently partnerships with Stellantis and Mitsubishi were added. Each joint venture produces localised versions of the partner brand's global models for the Chinese market.
Alongside its joint venture operations, GAC developed its own-branded Trumpchi (Chuanqi) passenger car range from 2010 onwards — a collection of SUVs and sedans designed with Italian styling consultancy input that have become genuinely competitive in China's mainstream segment. The Trumpchi GS8 seven-seat SUV in particular achieved critical acclaim for its design and specification, positioning GAC as a credible own-brand competitor to Korean and Japanese alternatives.
The most significant development in GAC's recent history has been the launch and rapid growth of AION — a dedicated electric vehicle brand established in 2017 that had grown to sell over 480,000 vehicles annually by 2023, making it one of China's top-three EV brands. AION's success has demonstrated GAC's ability to develop world-class electric technology independently of its international JV partners.
GAC's portfolio spans Italian-styled Trumpchi SUVs that compete with mainstream Korean rivals to AION's cutting-edge electric vehicles showcasing China's most advanced EV technology.

GAC's own-branded range spans Trumpchi SUVs and MPVs for the mainstream market, the AION electric vehicle range for zero-emission buyers, and a growing export lineup targeting international markets.
GAC has developed impressive independent technology credentials through its AION EV brand and ADiGO autonomous driving platform. AION's sponge silicon anode battery technology — developed with the company's Yuntianli battery subsidiary — enables ultra-fast charging in laboratory conditions. GAC's joint ventures with Toyota and Honda also expose the group to the most advanced hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell technologies.
GAC Trumpchi models have been making inroads in Azerbaijan and the broader Caucasus region, with the GS4 and GS8 SUVs attracting buyers seeking well-designed Chinese alternatives to Korean and Japanese rivals at lower price points. GAC's Italian-influenced styling gives its vehicles a more European aesthetic that resonates well in Azerbaijan's image-conscious urban market, particularly in Baku.
The AION electric brand is increasingly relevant as Azerbaijan develops its EV charging infrastructure and government policy encourages electrification. GAC's combination of strong EV technology credentials and competitive pricing — particularly the AION Y compact electric crossover — positions it well for Azerbaijan's emerging new-energy vehicle segment.
