ZAZ (Zaporizhzhia Automobile Plant) is Ukraine's oldest and most historically significant car manufacturer — a brand whose roots extend to the Soviet era and whose vehicles shaped personal mobility across the entire post-Soviet region for generations. From the tiny Zaporozhets of the 1960s to the Korean-derived Lanos of the late 1990s, ZAZ has produced cars that have been part of everyday life across Ukraine, Russia, the Caucasus, and Central Asia for over six decades.
ZAZ was established in 1960 in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine (then part of the Soviet Union), as a manufacturer of small, affordable vehicles for the Soviet working class. The plant was built on the site of a former agricultural machinery factory, with the specific mandate to produce a small "people's car" similar in concept to the German Volkswagen Beetle or the Italian Fiat 500 — but accessible to Soviet citizens on state salaries.
The first production model, the ZAZ-965 Zaporozhets, launched in 1960 and quickly became both celebrated and mocked — celebrated for offering affordable personal mobility to millions of Soviet families for the first time, and mocked for its tiny 746cc rear-mounted air-cooled engine, cramped interior, and handling characteristics that challenged even the most tolerant drivers. Despite its limitations, the Zaporozhets became an icon of Soviet automotive culture, and examples remain beloved by collectors across the former Soviet states.
The brand evolved significantly in the post-Soviet era, abandoning its own designs in favour of licensed production of mainstream European and Korean models. The partnership with Daewoo of South Korea in the 1990s brought the Lanos, Nubira, and Sens platforms to the ZAZ lineup, transforming the brand's product quality almost overnight. Although Daewoo's collapse created challenges, ZAZ continued producing Lanos-derived models until conflict-related disruptions affected the Zaporizhzhia plant in 2022.
ZAZ's model history spans Soviet-era minimalism to Korean-derived practicality — a journey from the tiny Zaporozhets air-cooled city car to the modern Lanos and Sens that dominated Ukrainian roads for decades.

ZAZ produced a range of compact cars across its history, from Soviet-era minimalism to Korean-technology-derived modern vehicles that met contemporary European standards.
ZAZ vehicles — particularly the Lanos and Sens — are exceptionally easy to maintain in post-Soviet markets including Azerbaijan, where the platform has been widely known for decades. The Daewoo-derived mechanical components are straightforward, with parts available through established supply chains that cover Daewoo, Chevrolet, and related GM platforms.
ZAZ vehicles, particularly the Lanos and Sens models, have been a familiar presence in the Azerbaijani used car market for decades. Imported through Ukraine, Russia, and other CIS countries, ZAZ Lanos cars offer some of the most affordable four-door sedan transport available, appreciated for their simple mechanics and the broad availability of replacement parts. The Lanos is well understood by Azerbaijani mechanics, making routine maintenance and repairs straightforward and inexpensive.
The Zaporozhets, though rare, occasionally appears as a collector's vehicle in Azerbaijan — appreciated by enthusiasts who value its unique place in Soviet automotive history. For buyers seeking practical used transport, the Lanos and Sens remain solid choices in the budget segment, particularly where low purchase price and minimal running costs are the primary selection criteria.
