FAW — First Automobile Works — was founded in 1953 at the personal direction of Mao Zedong as China's first automotive manufacturer, making it an icon of Chinese industrial history. Over more than seven decades, FAW has grown from a single factory in Changchun into one of the world's largest automotive enterprises, running joint venture lines with Toyota, Volkswagen, and Audi while also producing vehicles under its own brands.
FAW was founded on 15 July 1953 in Changchun, Jilin Province — a date inscribed in Chinese industrial history as the birth of the country's automotive industry. Built with Soviet technical assistance at the height of Sino-Soviet cooperation, FAW's first factory was constructed to produce Jiefang (Liberation) CA10 trucks based directly on the Soviet ZIS-150, which itself derived from the American Studebaker. The founding ceremony was a moment of national pride: a China emerging from decades of foreign occupation and civil war was making its own trucks.
FAW's first passenger car — the Hongqi (Red Flag) limousine — arrived in 1958, going on to serve for decades as the official vehicle of Chinese leaders and diplomats. The Hongqi CA770 became as symbolically charged a vehicle as the Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost or Cadillac One in other political contexts.
FAW's modern era began with the reform and opening-up policies of the 1980s. Joint ventures with Volkswagen (1991 — producing Audi and VW models) and then Toyota (2002) turned FAW into a manufacturing partner for two of the world's most demanding automotive quality standards. The company revived the Hongqi brand as a luxury EV marque in 2019, symbolising FAW's ambition to target the premium end of the global electric vehicle market under a brand with genuine historical weight.
FAW's product history encompasses the utilitarian Jiefang truck, the stately Hongqi limousine, and the modern Bestune SUV — a range that captures the full arc of China's automotive development across seven decades.

FAW's own-brand passenger car range is organised under the Bestune (mainstream) and Hongqi (premium/luxury) sub-brands, alongside the legendary Jiefang commercial vehicle series. FAW-Toyota and FAW-Volkswagen products are sold separately under their joint venture brands.
FAW's technology portfolio reflects seven decades of engineering development enriched by knowledge transfer from its Volkswagen, Audi, and Toyota joint ventures. The Hongqi brand carries FAW's most advanced technology claims: luxury EV platforms, autonomous driving development, and premium connected vehicle systems.
FAW's commercial vehicles — particularly the Jiefang truck series — have had a long-standing presence across Central Asia and the Caucasus, where their power, parts availability, and competitive operating economics have made them popular among logistics operators. Azerbaijan's construction and freight sectors have relied on Jiefang trucks for inter-regional transport across the country's varied terrain.
FAW's passenger car brands including Bestune have gained popularity in Azerbaijan in recent years alongside the dramatic improvement in Chinese automotive quality standards. The Hongqi brand's luxury EV models represent an ambitious proposition for Azerbaijan's premium car market, backed by the prestige of China's most historically significant automotive brand.
