SKODA AUTO is one of the oldest surviving automobile manufacturers in the world, with roots stretching back to 1895 in what was then the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Now a cornerstone of the Volkswagen Group, SKODA combines Central European engineering tradition with modern German group platform technology to deliver practical, well-specified cars at competitive price points.
SKODA's story begins in 1895, when Václav Laurin and Václav Klement — a mechanic and a bookseller respectively — founded Laurin & Klement in Mladá Boleslav, Bohemia, to manufacture bicycles. Within a decade, Laurin & Klement had progressed through motorcycles to automobiles, producing their first car — the Voiturette A — in 1905. The company was among the very first automobile manufacturers in Central Europe, producing vehicles that won international motorsport events and earned the region a reputation for engineering excellence.
The company merged with the industrial giant ŠKODA Works of Pilsen in 1925, gaining access to substantially greater manufacturing and financial resources. Through the turbulence of the 20th century — two world wars, nationalisation under communism, and the extraordinary political transition of 1989 — SKODA continued producing cars for Czechoslovak buyers under state ownership. The Škoda 105, 120, and 130 became iconic Eastern Bloc vehicles, characterised by rear-engined layouts and modest but practical engineering.
The transformative moment came in 1991, when Volkswagen AG acquired a stake in SKODA — later becoming sole owner. VW's investment brought modern platform technology, quality management systems, and global marketing reach. The Octavia, launched in 1996 on the Golf platform, announced the new SKODA to the world: a car with genuine VW Group engineering quality, sold at a significantly lower price point. The formula worked — SKODA grew from a regional brand into a genuine global player, selling nearly one million vehicles annually by the 2020s.
From the Octavia's practical excellence to the Superb's business-class spaciousness and the Enyaq's electric future, SKODA has consistently produced vehicles that punch above their price point in space, quality, and everyday usability.

SKODA's current lineup spans city cars to large seven-seat SUVs, with the brand's "Simply Clever" philosophy — practical, clever design details that make everyday life easier — running through every model. The range now includes pure electric models on the VW Group MEB platform alongside efficient turbocharged petrol and diesel options.
As a member of the Volkswagen Group, SKODA benefits from access to some of the world's most advanced automotive platforms and technology. The MQB modular platform underpins the Octavia, Kodiaq, and Karoq, while the MEB electric platform powers the Enyaq. SKODA adds its own "Simply Clever" innovations — practical details like umbrella holders in the door, boot-mounted ice scrapers, and clever storage solutions that VW Group engineers alone might not have prioritised.
SKODA has maintained a consistent presence in the Azerbaijani market, where the Octavia and Rapid have historically been popular choices for buyers seeking reliable, practical European cars at accessible prices. The brand's reputation for combining VW Group engineering quality with lower pricing than its German siblings resonates strongly with value-conscious Azerbaijani buyers.
The Kodiaq SUV has grown rapidly in popularity among Azerbaijani families seeking European SUV quality, while the Superb remains a favourite for professional and business use. SKODA's authorised dealer network in Baku offers warranty service and genuine parts, reinforcing buyer confidence in the brand's long-term ownership proposition across the Caucasus region.
