History & Origins

Vauxhall was founded in 1857 by Alexander Wilson in London as a pump and marine engine manufacturer. The company's name derives from the historic Vauxhall estate where its first London factory was located — the Faux Hall manor that once belonged to Fulk le Breant, a 16th century knight. The Griffin emblem was taken from the heraldry of that historic estate and remains the marque's recognisable symbol today.

In 1903 Vauxhall produced its first automobile, pivoting the company's focus entirely towards cars. In 1905 the company relocated to Luton. Then in 1925, General Motors acquired Vauxhall — the beginning of six decades in which the brand was managed by the North American corporate giant. During the GM era, Vauxhall produced a wide range of popular models for the British market.

With the acquisition of Opel/Vauxhall by PSA Group from GM in 2017, Vauxhall became part of the Stellantis group. Vauxhall today offers the British market models built on platforms shared with Opel, with popular models including the Astra, Corsa, Insignia, and Mokka sold under both badges. Only the name differs — the vehicles are technically identical.

Vauxhall Iron Works founded in London as a pump and marine engine manufacturer. The "Vauxhall" name and iconic Griffin emblem were drawn from the historic 16th-century estate where the original factory was sited.
1903
Vauxhall produced its first automobile. The company transitioned from steam power to the internal combustion engine, becoming one of the United Kingdom's earliest car manufacturers.
1925

1963
Vauxhall Viva launched — becoming a symbol of Vauxhall's mass-market success in the 1960s. The popular family car solidified the brand's position in the British market.
1980
Opel/Vauxhall badge engineering intensified — the Vauxhall Cavalier was essentially the Opel Ascona. This platform-sharing model defined Vauxhall's future direction.
2017
PSA Group (later Stellantis) acquired Opel/Vauxhall from GM for €2.2 billion. Vauxhall became Stellantis's face in the British market and continued sharing Opel platforms.

  • Full electric platform for Corsa-e and Mokka-e — 50 kWh battery, 330+ km real-world range
  • IntelliLux LED pixel headlights — adaptive lighting system maximising visibility for drivers
  • Modern AGR orthopaedically certified seats for Astra and Insignia models — long-distance comfort

Vauxhall in Azerbaijan

Vauxhall vehicles are rare in Azerbaijan — the brand's direct focus on the British market has limited its CIS-region export presence. However, given Opel's wide distribution in Azerbaijan, Vauxhall's technical foundations are well known locally — same platform, same engines, only a different badge.

Second-hand Vauxhall vehicles imported from Britain — particularly the Astra and Corsa — appear from time to time in the Azerbaijani market. Their maintenance is possible using Opel spare parts, making Vauxhall a practical second-hand option in Azerbaijan. Opel dealers can generally service the same-platform models.

Why Choose Vauxhall?

  • British heritage: Vauxhall has been an inseparable part of British roads for over 100 years. Owning one of this brand's vehicles means sharing in the rich history of British car culture.
  • Opel engineering, British badge: Vauxhall today shares the same platforms as Opel, increasing the availability of spare parts for maintenance in Azerbaijan.
  • Wide model range: From the Corsa supermini to the Insignia executive saloon, Vauxhall offers a model suited to every category of buyer.
  • Electric future: The Corsa-e and Mokka-e connect Vauxhall seriously to electric mobility — a positive signal from a long-term investment perspective.
  • Accessible second-hand prices: Vauxhall models on the British market have traditionally held competitive second-hand values, making them a favourable option for budget-conscious buyers.
