Origins & Heritage

SKODA's story begins in 1895, when Václav Laurin and Václav Klement — a mechanic and a bookseller respectively — founded Laurin & Klement in Mladá Boleslav, Bohemia, to manufacture bicycles. Within a decade, Laurin & Klement had progressed through motorcycles to automobiles, producing their first car — the Voiturette A — in 1905. The company was among the very first automobile manufacturers in Central Europe, producing vehicles that won international motorsport events and earned the region a reputation for engineering excellence.

The company merged with the industrial giant ŠKODA Works of Pilsen in 1925, gaining access to substantially greater manufacturing and financial resources. Through the turbulence of the 20th century — two world wars, nationalisation under communism, and the extraordinary political transition of 1989 — SKODA continued producing cars for Czechoslovak buyers under state ownership. The Škoda 105, 120, and 130 became iconic Eastern Bloc vehicles, characterised by rear-engined layouts and modest but practical engineering.

The transformative moment came in 1991, when Volkswagen AG acquired a stake in SKODA — later becoming sole owner. VW's investment brought modern platform technology, quality management systems, and global marketing reach. The Octavia, launched in 1996 on the Golf platform, announced the new SKODA to the world: a car with genuine VW Group engineering quality, sold at a significantly lower price point. The formula worked — SKODA grew from a regional brand into a genuine global player, selling nearly one million vehicles annually by the 2020s.
