TOFAS (Türk Otomobil Fabrikası A.Ş.) is Turkey's pioneering domestic automobile manufacturer, founded in 1968 as a joint venture between Koç Holding and Fiat of Italy. For over five decades, TOFAS has produced millions of vehicles at its Bursa factory — initially under Fiat licence and evolving into a major European manufacturing and engineering hub that today exports vehicles to dozens of countries under the Fiat, Alfa Romeo, and other Stellantis brand nameplates.
TOFAS was established in 1968 as a strategic partnership between Turkey's largest industrial conglomerate, Koç Holding, and Fiat of Italy — a joint venture designed to bring domestic automobile production capability to Turkey and reduce reliance on expensive imported vehicles. The Bursa factory that TOFAS built became one of the most significant manufacturing investments in Turkish industrial history, creating tens of thousands of direct and indirect jobs in the Marmara region.
Early TOFAS vehicles were essentially licensed Fiat models produced for the Turkish domestic market under names like Murat 124 (based on the Fiat 124) and Murat 131 (based on the Fiat 131). These became iconic vehicles in Turkey, forming the backbone of the country's family car market through the 1970s and 1980s. The Tofas Sahin — a long-running compact sedan — became one of the most recognised and beloved cars in Turkish automotive history, produced with minimal updates for decades due to its extraordinary affordability and mechanical simplicity.
In the modern era, TOFAS has evolved from a domestic licensee to a genuine European manufacturing partner for Stellantis, producing the Fiat Egea (Tipo) sedan and estate, the Fiat Doblo van, and commercial variants for export across Europe, the Middle East, and beyond. The Bursa facility is one of Turkey's largest and most technically advanced manufacturing plants, with capacity exceeding 400,000 vehicles annually.
From the beloved Sahin that defined Turkish motoring for a generation to the modern Fiat Egea exported across three continents, TOFAS's production history spans five decades of Turkish automotive excellence.

TOFAS today primarily manufactures Fiat and Stellantis group models under contract, with the Bursa plant serving as the sole global production point for several key models including the Fiat Egea family and the Fiat Doblo van range.
TOFAS's Bursa facility has evolved into one of Europe's most technically capable automotive manufacturing plants, incorporating modern robotics, quality control systems, and engineering development capability. The plant's R&D centre — established in partnership with Fiat — carries out genuine vehicle engineering work including Turkish-market specification development and components engineering. As Stellantis accelerates its electrification programme, the Bursa plant is being prepared for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle production.
TOFAS and its produced vehicles have a significant presence in Azerbaijan, connected by Turkey's close political, cultural, and economic ties to the country. Turkish-produced Fiat Egea and Doblo models are widely sold through Azerbaijani dealers, while historic Tofas Sahin models remain in service as reliable, ultra-affordable workhorse vehicles. The strong Turkish-Azerbaijani relationship — famously described as "one nation, two states" — creates natural commercial linkages that benefit TOFAS-produced vehicles.
Parts availability for TOFAS vehicles is strong in Azerbaijan through the Turkish import network, and Turkish-market servicing knowledge is widely available among Azerbaijani mechanics. For buyers seeking affordable, well-supported European-engineered vehicles with strong Turkish supply chain backing, TOFAS-produced models represent a highly practical choice in the Azerbaijani market.
